Il est étrange que l’on dise de Dieu qu’il a créé le monde, et non : Dieu créé continuellement le monde. Pourquoi faudrait-il  que le fait que le monde ait commencé à être soit un plus grand miracle que le que le fait d’avoir continué à être?

Les anthropologues l’ont montré : aussi loin qu’ils puissent remonter le passé, ils constatent que les interrogations sur l’origine ont préoccupé l’être humain. Toutes les sociétés, grandes  ou petites, puissantes ou faibles, perdues sur un îlot rocheux ou dans un désert inhospitalier, proposent une «histoire du monde». La variété et la richesse des récits qu’ils rapportent des 4 coins de la planète  sont d’ailleurs impressionnantes. La question de l’origine du monde envoûte les hommes, presque tous les hommes, aimante leur esprit et leur âme.

L’eau que nous buvons, même quand nous la disons « fraîche », n’est pas née de la dernière pluie. Quelle que soit sa source, elle n’est même jamais de toute première jeunesse. En effet, de quoi l’eau est-elle constituée ? De molécules d’eau, elles-mêmes formées d’atomes d’hydrogène et d’oxygène. Or les premiers se sont formés dans l’univers primordial. (il y a 13,7 milliards d’années) et les seconds dans le cœur d’une étoile (il y a environ 5 milliards d’années) qui les a  ensuite dispersés dans le vide intergalactique. Se désaltérer est donc un acte grave et profond qui nous connecte intimement à presque toute l’histoire de l’univers : il consiste en définitive à absorber des bribes de l’aurore du monde mélangées à des cendres plus tardives du feu stellaire.

Si nous parvenons vraiment à découvrir une théorie unificatrice, elle devrait avec le temps être compréhensible par tout monde  dans ses grands principes, pas seulement par une poignée de savants. Philosophes, scientifiques et personnes ordinaires, tous seront capables de prendre part à la discussion sur le pourquoi de notre existence et de notre univers. Et nous nous trouvions un jour la réponse, ce serait le triomphe de la raison humaine, qui nous permettrait alors de connaître la pensée de Dieu.

Le test d’Alamogordo 

Le 16 juillet, à Alamogardo, dans le désert du Nouveau Mexique, les scientifiques de Los Alamos procèdent à la première explosion d’une bombe atomique ; le nom de code de l’expérience est Trinity. L’explosion libère une énergie équivalente à celle dégagée par l’explosion de 13 000 tonnes de TNT. Fermi supervise l’expérience et l’analyse des mesures effectuées. Segrè est à ses côtés au moment de  l’explosion :

Tout de suite après l’explosion, Fermi se leva et fit tomber à terre des petits bouts de papier ressemblant à des confettis. Il avait préparé une petite expérience toute simple pour mesurer l’énergie développée par l’explosion : les bouts de papier devraient tomber verticalement avant l’explosion mais, à l’arrivée de l’onde de choc (quelques secondes après la lumière), ils seraient déviés de quelques centimètres dans la direction de propagation de l’onde. La valeur de cette déviation et la distance entre les bouts de papier et la source permettraient de calculer l’énergie de l’explosion. Fermi, en utilisant cette mesure grossière, mais simple, put ainsi évaluer immédiatement l’énergie libérée. […] Plus tard, des moyens bien plus précis confirmèrent que le calcul de Fermi était une bonne approximation de la quantité d’énergie libérée par l’explosion.


Une heure à peine après l’explosion, Fermi enfile une combinaison protectrice et, muni d’un compteur approprié, monte à bord d’un char d’assaut spécial, protégé d’épaisses couches de plomb, afin de se rendre sur le lieu de l’explosion. Il ne reste rien de la tour où la bombe était placée. Le sable du désert alentour semble s’être vitrifié. Sous des mesures de sécurité particulières, Fermi fait ramasser quelques échantillons du terrain pour en mesurer la radioactivité et en faire une analyse chimique. Segrè raconte : «Fermi fut impressionné par l’état du sol et les transformations dues à l’explosion. Nous consacrâmes la fin de la journée à recueillir les données enregistrées par les divers instruments et à préparer notre retour à la base de Los Alamos.»

En 1946, dans une lettre à Chimical and Engineering News, l’organe de la Société américaine de chimie (ACS), il soulignait les obligations sociales des chimistes et de l’ensemble des scientifiques et exprimait l’espoir que «de plus en plus de chimistes, en plus de leurs activités professionnels, consacreront du temps et de  l’énergie à la résolution des problèmes politiques et sociaux.

Il fut un des premiers à calculer des estimations sur la fréquence probable des malformations congénitales dans les générations à venir résultant de l’exposition aux produits de fission libérés lors des essais nucléaires.

Dans une conférence donnée à Paris, à l’UNESCO, le 19 juin 1964, il affirmera : «Aujourd’hui, l’essai d’une seule bombe de 20 mégatonnes, dans l’atmosphère ou à la surface de la terre, libère dans l’atmosphère des matériaux radioactifs qui, selon les plus exactes estimations possibles, causeront des maux graves à 550 000 enfants à naître, ou entraîneront leur mort. C’est ce qu’il en coûte à un pays pour tester une seule bombe H. Chacun doit le savoir.»

La bombe H offre un pouvoir de destruction quasi illimité puisqu’elle imite les mécanismes qui perpétuent le soleil (cycle de Bethe) et, en utilisant cette bombe, affirme de son côté le philosophe allemand Karl Jaspers, «l’humanité peut provoquer sa propre destruction». En France, Henri Bergson, Louis de Broglie, Frédéric Joliot-Curie lançaient, de leur côté, de tels avertissements.

Dans son percutant opuscule No more war! Pauling plaide non seulement pour l’abandon tant des essais que des armes nucléaires, mais aussi pour la mise au ban de la guerre elle-même, proposant même à l’ONU de créer une Organisation de recherche pour la paix dans le monde. Toujours logique avec lui-même et avec ses engagements, il se consacra à cette tâche, au Centre pour l’étude des institutions démocratiques de Santa Barbara, quand il lui fallut quitter  le CIT en 1963. Il était du reste le rédacteur en chef honoraire de l’Encyclopédie mondiale de la paix publiée à Oxford.

Ainsi donc, pour lui, science et éthique sont inséparables. Le refus qu’il opposa à la commission du Sénat partait de sa conviction que nul Américain ne devait être obligé de confesser ses propres croyances politiques. Il déclara à la presse : «Je ne suis pas communiste. Je n’ai  jamais été communiste. Je n’ai jamais eu à faire avec le Parti Communiste», mais rejetant la police des consciences, il insista sur le fait qu’il ne témoignerait jamais devant aucune commission sur ce point précis. Or, à l’époque, la Californie, patrie du cinéma est un des rares États américains où le parti communiste et la gauche  en générale se signalaient par leurs activités, était prise d’un sérieux accès de fièvre maccarthyste (affaire des 10 d'Hollywood et expulsion de Charlie Chaplin des États-Unis en septembre 1952), les autorités municipales de Los Angeles ayant même fait retirer tous «les livres communistes» de la bibliothèque publique. 

Il n’était pas du genre à se décourager, d’autant que les États-Unis et l’URSS avaient fait exploser leur bombe H, à quelques mois d’intervalle, respectivement en 1952 et 1953. Fort du soutien de nombreux scientifiques, il continua de plus belle sa croisade contre les armes nucléaires et signa, en  1955, avec 55 autres Nobel, la fameuse Déclaration de Mainau. Celle-ci eut un grand écho dans le monde. On y lit, par exemple : « [..] Nous observons avec horreur que la science est en train de donner à l’humanité les moyens de s’autodétruire. Avec l’usage militaire des armes actuelles, la terre peut-être contaminée par la radioactivité au point que des peuples seront annihilés en entier. Neutres aussi bien que belligérants succomberont.». Sans nier que la paix peut trouver son compte dans l’équilibre de la terreur entre puissances nucléaires, les pétitionnaires concluent : «Toutes les nations doivent parvenir à la décision de renoncer à la force en dernier ressort ; faute de quoi, elles cesseront d’exister.»

Le 10 octobre 1963 devient effectif un traité sur l’interdiction limitée des essais nucléaires dans l’atmosphère, les océans et le cosmos. C’est le jour que choisit le Comité norvégien du Nobel pour annoncer l’attribution du prix Nobel de la paix à Linus Pauling. Traduisant le sentiment de bien des journaux conservateurs que Pauling poursuivait régulièrement en justice pour leurs insinuations malveillantes à son endroit, le magazine Life parla d’un «camouflet retentissant infligé au peuple américain.» Tout le monde n’était cependant pas au diapason de ce magazine.» Ainsi, le New York Times écrivait : «Alors que d’autres ont pris la parole pour des nations, des idéologies et par-dessus tout pour le pouvoir, Linus Pauling parla pour l’Homme. Si l’humanité doit échapper à l’Holocauste, ultime, elle parlera, et pour longtemps, de Linus Pauling.

Au mépris de la tradition et à l’étonnement du président du comité Nobel, Gunnar Jahn, l’ambassade américaine n’accueillit pas Pauling à Oslo, sous prétexte qu’elle portait le deuil du président J.F. Kennedy. Quand aux dirigeants du CIT, ils manifestèrent leur vif déplaisir, au point que le nouveau lauréat se vit dans l’obligation de quitter une institution dans laquelle il avait passé 39 ans! Même l’organe de la Société américaine de chimie (ACS), dont il fut pourtant le président, enterra la nouvelle, un paragraphe unique, dans ses dernières pages, alors qu’il avait magnifiquement célébré, en 1955, son prix Nobel de chimie. Linus Pauling démissionna de l’ACS.
